Trump's economic speech in Detroit that he read from teleprompters at the point of a gun held by six guys named Steve, reminded us of Dr Johnson's comment on the dog walking on his hind legs, "It is not done well, but you are surprised to find it done at all."
Ok ok, so referencing Dr. Johnson is elitist and doesn't sound as folksy as the elitist ignoramus and serial business wrecker Trump.
To continue the archaic references, the speech, like the Curate's bad egg, was good in parts. But the parts that were good, like job promises are fantasy, and the parts that are bad are really bad.
Let's face it, some people will be fooled into thinking he's looking out for the little guy.
But what are the facts? Here are a few of the many atrocities in the speech:
Getting rid of Death Taxes
Yea! Sounds like getting rid of death, right? No. Death Tax..the traditional Republican bogey man. Eliminating it would benefit only Trump and his friends. America would have less money for infrastructure, jobs, education, etc. The current estate tax exempts $10.9 million for a couple and $5.45 million for an individual. Who is the hypothetical "little guy" who pays so-called death taxes on his estate? $10.9 million or $5.4 million is a heck of a lot to accumulate on construction worker or teacher salaries! Trump's estate tax proposal should be called The Death Tax Give-Away for Trump and his friends.
Tax Breaks for the People
Another rotten part in the egg which sounds good. However, The New York Times estimates it would mean a 5.3 percent boost in income for the wealthiest 1 percent. But only 0.2 percent for the middle class. Don't worry folks. It always trickles down, or something does.
No More Pesky Regulations
And don't worry about financial guys ripping you off, more fraud on the internet, identity theft, food-borne disease that kills 3,000 and hospitalizes 128,000 every year, widespread devastation from climate change, etc. No one will be looking.
Detroit is Run by Democrats
Forget Republican Gov Rick Snyder who has control over the city's deficit and nearby Flint's water. Maybe Trump genuinely forgot him because Snyder refuses to endorse him.
Hillary Will Raise Middle Class Taxes
CNN rated this as false. The nonpartisan Tax Policy Center notes that in Hillary's plan "nearly all of the tax increases would fall on the top 1 percent; the bottom 95 percent of taxpayers would see little or no change in their taxes.
Trump blatantly lied when he said: "Recently, at a campaign event, Hillary Clinton short-circuited again — to use a now famous term — when she accidentally told the truth and said she wanted to raise taxes on the middle class."
NBC in its fact check said: "Clinton did not say this. Despite a recording of the event that clearly shows Clinton saying " we aren't going to raise taxes on the middle class," the Trump campaign has distributed a video falsely captioning the video with, "We are going to raise taxes on the middle class." PolitiFact had already given Trump a "Pants on Fire" rating for this claim prior to his speech
Paul Waldman in the Washington Post sums up the general educated response to the speech:
"As you might expect, the speech was full of falsehoods and nonsense, such as the idea that the unemployment rate is a "hoax" and that Hillary Clinton "said she wanted to raise taxes on the middle class."
"Like every other Republican in memory, Trump argues that the only thing keeping our economy from rocketing into the stratosphere are the chains that government has locked around it. "I want to jump-start America," he said, "and it can be done, and it won't even be that hard." Also, everyone gets a pony."
Politico pointed out that most economists don't believe his rehashed economic speech. But who needs experts in Trumpistan?
"He has no coherent economic theory unless you repeal the rules of math," said Justin Wolfers, an economist at the University of Michigan. "He's put Social Security and Medicare in a lockbox, promised massive tax cuts—which he claims at his rallies are for the middle class but most goes to the rich—and he claims he's going to balance the budget. And these things are incompatible. The only way that can happen—it would have to be the greatest growth in the U.S. economy, in any economy, in the history of the world."
Thank God we will hear a real and honest economics speech on Thursday from the Real candidate. Voices4Hillary will be there.
